About the practice
I'm Jeremy Mathers, an ecological landscape designer based in Toronto and the founder of Living City Native Gardens. I design, install, and steward native plant landscapes that function as habitat in Toronto's dense urban conditions.
My work is built around a detailed knowledge of Ontario's native plant communities: which species grow where, what wildlife depends on them, how they develop over time, and how to compose them into gardens that work in urban settings.
I hold a Certificate in Landscape Design for Climate Resilience from Toronto Metropolitan University and an MA in Communication and Culture from York University and Toronto Metropolitan University. My background in research, writing, and editorial work informs how I approach ecological design: methodically, with attention to documentation and long-term observation.
I collaborate with homeowners, architects, and community partners to integrate ecological function into everyday urban landscapes, where durability, daily use, and biodiversity coexist.
Work by Living City Native Gardens has appeared in ELLE Decoration Canada as part of a Toronto residential Passive House project on a ravine-adjacent site.
